This final page of photos from the 2003 European Eventing Championships brings you photos of the highest placed Irish rider,Susan Shortt (IRL) and the 11 year old mare Just Beauty Queen. This combination had a meteoric rise from 39th after Dressage, where they did a test which would have been less than pleasing to a final placing of 11th. Susan was a member of the Irish team who secured one of the three final team placings available for Athens Olympic Games. Belgium also secured a place completing the quota in the run-up to the Games next year. The Final Placings gave the Gold medal to Great Britain's team members William Fox-Pitt (finished 8th individually), Pippa Funnell (finished 3rd individually), and Leslie Law (finished 4th individually) which also gave Pippa Funnell the Bronze medal individually after a brilliant clear round in the showjumping. Fourth team member Jeanette Brakewell was eliminated after fall of horse on Cross Country. France took the Silver medal with team members Nicolas Touzaint who held held the lead all the way from his fantastic Dressage score of 29.80 through to taking the Individual Gold medal as well as the Team Silver. Arnaud Baoiteau finished individually in 10th spot after being in 23rd after Dressage. Jean Teulere was another to have an incredible rise in placings after sitting in 35th place after dressage to finishing in individual 13th at the completion of the event. Fourth team member Jean Luc Force rose from 20th place after Dressage to finish in 16th position. The Bronze medal went to Belgium with Karin Donckers finishing strongly in 5th position provisionally after Dressage but slipping one place to finish 6th overall after two rails fell in the showjumping. Carl Bouckaert rose from 22nd after dressage to finish in 14th place. Dolf Desmedt rose 10 spots after his dressage score and finished in 21st position with the final team member for Belgium, Constantin van Rijckervorsel staying in his provisional dressage placing of 29th at the end of the competition. |
