Who would this title best describe?

"Lunatics, Legends and Lotharios"

Yes you have it in one - showjumpers throughout the world!

In this case it happens to be the title of a new book which will be launched in Western Australia on October 10th.

Showjumping in Western Australian had its humble beginnings in 1879, when a two guinea prize was offered for "...best hunter to be tried at the leaping bar in the Show Yard", according to author Glen McLaren and in modern showjumping history Western Australia is now becoming a leader in the sport in Australia. With their strong base of breeders/owners and riders combined with an innovative and enthusiastic EFA Branch they are producing some fantastic shows where you can see quality showjumping at its best.

It is obvious that Glen was "bitten by the showjumping bug" when he began indulging in the sport in 2000 after a lifetime career breaking horses with 20 of these years at Ascot. Glen also holds his PhD in Australian History and has numerous published articles as well as eight monographs - this, his ninth is a labour of love which I assume was born from his entry into the showjumpingarenas!

Glen traces the history of showjumping from this unusual beginning in 1879 through to the modern era of current day showjumping. McLaren treats the subject with accuracy and humour and talks of the impact of the Bond/Connell era as well Peter Cooke and his impact on the sport.

The book incorporates over 80 photographs with some dating back to the 1890's and there are also some great interviews with past and current legends of the sport.

My advice to Glen is to beware - once bitten by this "bug" there is actually no cure - and hopefully we will see more books from Glen on this subject - he may even venture down south and to the east to find some more of the lunatics, legends and lotharios!

Showjumping WA are pleased to be launching this great book, in time for the Christmas shopping list, on October 10th and to order a first edition copy make sure you get in early (as they will run out quickly) email immediately.
