BATES
NEWCOMERS AWARD 2003,
HEALTHWAYS HORSE OF THE YEAR 2003 &
THE YOUNG HORSE CHAMPIONSHIP 2003
SCHEDULE OF EVENTS 10TH OCTOBER 2003
THE
YOUNG HORSE CHAMPIONSHIP - October 10th SEC.
To be
held in conjunction with the Horse of the Year Final and the Bates Final.
General guidelines are as follows:
" Classes will be held for 4, 5, 6 & 7 year old horses. Horse birthdays
will be calculated as from August 1st.
" Judges will be Les Bunning, Kate Pither and guest rider and judge Rod
Brown.
" It was planned that Rod would ride the top three in each class, but
due to time constraints he will now ride the winners from each age group to
decide the Champion of Champions.
First
Round - Outside.
There will be eight obstacles in the course and each horse will be judged
by the guest rider and two other judges jumping this course. At this stage
4 year olds will jump 90cm, 5 year olds - 1.00m ,6 year olds -1.05m and 7
year olds - 1.10m. Each judge scores out of 100 and this is achieved as follows:
¢
Fence 1 - 8 is out of 5 for each fence (40),
¢ Conformation 10 marks,
¢ Suitability 10 marks,
¢ Technique 20 marks,
¢ Rideability 20 marks
¢ Two points deducted for each fence down.
The totals
of the three judges are then added together and then divided by 3 to reach
a percentage out of 100.
Guidelines
for the judges are:
"
Conformation - judged under saddle as each entrant comes in the ring and stands
for a few moments for the judges to have a look.
" Suitability - the judges will watch the temperament and the attitude
of the horse in the ring.
" Technique - Shape over the fence and both front and back ends.
" Rideability - is judged between the fences as to how they go - the
outline and attitude.
" The other factor that is taken into account is that the course is to
be ideally jumped "as built" - so if there are four strides between
fences then the judges like to see it ridden that way. These rounds are not
timed.
2nd Round
- Outside
If numbers permit there will be a second round and the top ten will go into
this. The same format will apply as for the 1st round. Heights will be 4 year
olds - 90cm, 5 year olds - 1.05m, 6 year olds - 1.10 & 7 year olds - 1.15m.
From this round the final placings are decided.
Final
for the Champion of Champions.
The final will take place indoors after the Horse of the Year final and the
guest rider Rod Brown will be wearing a mike so that he can give a commentary
on each horse as he rides it. It is his job to score each horse for rideability
out of 10 and the highest score will be the Champion of Champions. There will
be three fences (or more) in the arena placed where Rod wants them and a ground
crew will be on hand to raise and lower these as Rod asks. It is anticipated
that he does a little flat work gets a feel for each horse, then starts with
a cross rail and goes from there. Maximum of 10 minutes per horse.
