In a thrilling jump off between Uncle John and niece Ellen Whittaker who was
competing in her first Hickstead Derby, John was victorious on William Funnell's
horse when he could not ride due to a severe groin injury.

dropped to second placing giving Blyth Tait the double honour of winning both
