| The track for the Young Rider Teams competition was about as nasty as you can get at any major show - this is the European Championships and so the track had to be tough but I know for certain that there would be many senior showjumpers who would have struggled over this course - the first fencve was inviting enough, a vertical which then went on to a nice enoug oxer, which was not square- this was then followed by a right sweep to the vertical which was number three and from this point on the carnage began! The first of two doubles in a row, fence 4a was a rising oxer which sat at 1.50m tall and 1.60m wide, one stride to 4b which was a very narrow vertical stile then 6 short strides to 5a which was a tall vertical, one stride to a dirty big square oxer! And as if this wasn't bad enough they riders then had a left turn back to a vertical on it's own followed by a left gallop to the 16' open water, 6 strides to the vertical and if they survived this they could head for home via another double combination and some more very square oxers. The water caused less issues than everyone expected in that only one horse pulle dup at it but many had a foot in the water - it was very wide and very spooky coming ito it with the jet skiis being one issue but the other issues was the small wall in front of the water was shaped like a tunel and so the horses could actually see the water glistening through it - but as I said, only one pulledup at it - a testament to the ability of these Young Riders, as it was good riding that prevented many from pulling up at the water. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

| Right - Olive Clarke, for Ireland and Hands Free giving this oxer plenty of air and looking super. This very talented 1993 Irish Sport Horse gelding has a huge career in front of him! | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

Above centre is Lee Williams riding 8 year old Oldenburg mare, Lacanda - another of the British Gold medal team. The team rode brilliantly in both rounds and Mike Florence was definitely the proudest man on the showgrounds and the British supporters enjoyed the sunshine which was made all the sweeter by the brilliant results for all the British riders at this huge event. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
