NOBILITY
a tribute to the Horse

With thanks to William Micklem
21st August, 2003

At Dublin Horse Show during the Dressage display in the main arena William Micklem spoke of the Irish Horse by way of slightly readjusting this magnificent piece written Ronald Duncan in 1949.

William Micklem is what is known in my world as a "true horseman" and I am pleased to be able to tell you that he has a new book on the market - the Complete Horse Riding Manual and it is published by Dorling Kindersley. I have not yet had an opportunity to see the book myself but hope to be bringing you a review of it in the very near future as I have long been a fan of Mr Micklam and his work.

For anyone interested in arranging a wonderful day/evening with this master of the horse and also the spoken word William is available to do educational presentations which I believe would be a fantastic event.

A tribute to the Irish Horse
with thanks to William Micklem and the original author Ronald Duncan

The horse's story is the story of this land,
Where in this wide world can man find
Nobility without pride,
Friendship without envy,
Beauty without vanity?

Here, where grace is laced with muscle
And strength by gentleness confined.
He serves without servility,
He has fought without enmity,
There is nothing so powerful,
Nothing less violent,
Nothing so quick,
Nothing more patient.

All our past has been borne on his back,
All our history on his industry,

We are his heirs, he our inheritance.

Ladies and Gentlemen, the Irish Horse!

My grateful thanks to William Micklem for allowing me the use of this version of such a magnificent tribute to the Horse - Jan Heine
