The hardworking team from the Mount Gambier Showjumping Club have been "hard at it" again putting on their now well supported Youth Carnival of Showjumping which heralds the new year of showjumping for South Australia.

New South Wales have for many years taken honours as the first show of the year with the Bega World Cup Show which runs over the New Years celebrations - the 2005 Bega World Cup Qualifying class was won in fine style by Greg Smith from Victoria with Henry Higgs, Becy Allen, also from Victoria took 2nd spot and Victorian Young Rider Jamie Kermond took 3rd place with his thoroughbred gelding Stylish King.

The Course Designer for the weekend was Mount Gambier's local identity and International Course Designer, John Wilsher and he was obviously spurred on by the Australian National Championships held in Mt Gambier just on a month ago - the reports are that the courses were super tracks which encouraged riders to think rather than "kick, pull and yank" and that can only be good for the future of Australian Showjumping.

The weekend started, as so many at Mount Gambier do, with Training rounds in the morning. This gives riders and horse a chance to have a good look at the arena and te fences, with the liverpool always being on course for the training rounds - I would seriously have to wonder if South Australian horses and riders ever have problems with the water obstacles - I would think not thanks to the Mount Gambier Showjumping Club's understanding of "training of horses" and their willingness to allow riders and horses to train prior to the show - aside from anything else it makes for excellent jumping throughout the weekend - so the competitions began at 1pm and the last horse went through the finish flags at 8pm, leaving a very tired Course Designer, Crash Crew and Judge and Time Keeper.
Above: Amanda Barclay, the youngest of the three Barclays, is making sure that she keeps the Barclay name in the placings in Australia with her super team of horses. We hear that Amanda has also now snaffled the ride on brother Scottie's top horse Framfield as he is now base din Ireland, coming home only for R&R over the summer.
Above right: Bianca Gilchrist is another of the Young Riders who will, in the not too distant future be heard in the Senior ranks - Bianca spent time riding in the USA and impressed all with her work ethic, dedication and general happy attitude towards life.
