| More mares may compete at top level in the future, if plans to allow the use of Regumate go ahead. Regumate is a drug which is known to suppress mareish behaviour without increasing or decreasing aggressive type behaviour so often associated with cycling mares, and could be soon allowed in international competition. The FEI has announced plans to permit the use of Regumate, which is used to suppress excessive heat in mares leading to often times difficult behaviour, among horses taking part in international competitions. There is also the possibility of lowering the threshold for Salicylic Acid (Asprin) The decision, which was taken at an FEI meeting last week, is a huge step forward, and one which may lead to an increase in the number of mares competing internationally. Andrew Higgins, a member of the FEI veterinary commitee was quoted as saying "It will go to the general assembly for final approval in May, after which time Regumate will be allowed under three criteria. First, the drug will only be allowed for use in mares. Second, only the dose recommended by the manufacturer can be used, and lastly, a medication form must signed by the administering vet and given to the FEI for approval." This decision comes after several years of debate during which John McEwen, who heads the International Treating Vets Association, has repeatedly asked the FEI to approve the use of this particular drug and now with Andrew Higgins being adamant that they "have done a lot of research into its physiological effects, and were satisfied that it doesnt make a mare any more or less dominant which could affect her competitive edge" it looks like the use of the drug may be approved as early as May. This ruling, if passed by the general assembly will apply to international competition only but there may well be a flow on effect where National Federations will see fit to follow the FEI ruling on the use of Regumate and it will be interesting to follow which Federations will allow the use of this drug. All competitors please note - Regumate has NOT yet been approved for use in FEI competitions and you must check with your National Federations for rulings regarding National competition. The Australian Equestrian Federation, EFA, have been asked to comment and as soon as a response is received we will bring it to you. | ||
