The legendary big grey horse Subzero owns the hearts of many Australians and not just as a racehorse and he was in trouble.............

Subzero began racing as a three year old and throughout his racing career he built up some very impressive race results. Besides winning the most famous horse race in Australia - The Melbourne Cup in 1992, Subzero also won the Adelaide Cup and South Australian Derby in the same year. Subzero won nearly two million dollars in prize money-nearly 11 million dollars by today's standards. Career wise, he had 42 starts for 4 wins, 5 seconds and 5 thirds. His last start was the Brisbane Cup on the 13th June 1994. 'Subby' (as he is affectionately known) then became a Clerk of the Course horse for 15 years and only recently retired from that role in June, 2008. He now continues his role as an Ambassador for Racing Victoria, visiting many schools each year and has even been permitted to walk through the doors of a nursing home as the patients were too ill to come out doors to see him!

Australia's hero of the turf, 21 year old Subzero was facing a slow and painful return to his predisposed condition of Osteo-Arthritis after AQIS stopped the import of the equine joint treating powder his owner Graham Salisbury had been importing from overseas. This would spell the end for the great horse as Graham would not allow him to suffer like that and he would have to be put down.

Enter Equine Health Science, a small Melbourne based family business that makes Shark Net Joint Powder Concentrate for horses. Equine Health Science's Seumas Marwood stated "We discussed 'Subby's problem today with Graham and Dr Howard, his treating vet. After doing some research on the case we found that our local product actually delivers more than 8 times as much active ingredient (Glycosaminoglycans) than the stuff Graham was importing and because we are a small business we were able to tweak our formulation to suit him. He is now very happy and I bet the "Bureaucrats" at customs are breathing a sigh of relief too."

While Seumas has had an active interest in racing as an owner trainer he is better known in equestrian circles as an eventer both as a competitor and current Chairman of Selectors for the Australian Olympic Team. "I hate to see any horse suffer unnecessarily, especially a champion like Subzero. I still remember his amazing run to win the Melbourne Cup in 92. Shark Net has already helped extend the careers of hundreds of Australian horses and played a role in the careers of Olympians and racing champions alike. I've guaranteed Graham that we will look after 'Subby' as long as he lives. He's deserved it."

Stay tuned as we will bring you more news on Subbie and photos to come!

Seumas Marwood and his Victorian, Australian based company get the thumbs up for company of the year for helping this legendary horse!
